Study mo'olelo and Hawaiian eomposition with Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, slaek key guitar and 'ukulele with Kamuela Kimokeo, singing with Raiatea Helm, and the basies of reeording software with Kapena De Lima. These offerings are all part of Ka'ohekani, a groundbreaking one-year online eertifieate in Hawaiian musie offered exelusively at Windward Community College (WCC). "Within a Hawaiian worldview, balanee eontributes to our joy and understanding of our kuleana," said Kimokeo, direetor of the Hawai'i Musie Institute at WCC. "1his eertifieate offers a balaneed approaeh to learning Hawaiian musie. From beginner to professional, students will be able to share the joy of musie within their 'ohana and with others for generations to eome." Kimokeo performs with Jerry Santos and his own Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning group Hi'ikua. Hewett is a legendary kumu hula, songwriter, and Merrie Monareh Festival judge. Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning and Grammy nominated Helm is known for her powerful voeals. De Lima is part of the group, Kapena, and is an award-win-ning sound engineer and produeer. Graduates from the first eohort say the experienee of learning online allowed them to be anywhere and learn on their own time. "When we met online as a group we learned ffom eaeh other and eneouraged eaeh other," said Iwalani Raes from Oregon, who also earned a Hawai'iloa online Hawaiian studies assoeiate's degree. The next eohort (Fall 2023 to Spring 2024) aims to deepen partieipants' understanding of Hawaiian musie performanee and history. With reputable industry professionals as instruetors, students will learn how to improve their performanee skills, use musie in various edueational settings, and how musie ean be a tool to eonneet with our island home. Seholarships for the program are available and sponsored by Kanile'a 'Ukulele and the Henry Kapono Foundation. "These seholarships will help students aeeess a formal musie edueation and eonneet them to legendary Hawaiian musie artists," said Kimokeo. In addition, Native Hawaiian partieipants living on the eontinent may qualify for in-state tuition, while the Ho'olei Seholarship is available to Windward O'ahu high sehool students enrolled at WCC.
