Grant provides assistance for women's health screenings

By Glee Stormont October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the

^ disease. The Queen's Women's Health Center would like to encourage women to schedule an appointment for an annual screening manunogram, or x-ray of the breast. The health screening is a critical tool for detecting breast cancer, a disease in whieh early detection is the key to survival. Many women shy

away from getting screenings because they have no medical insurance or are underinsured. Fortunately, The Queen's Medical Center-Women's Health Center has received grant aid to help.

In partnership with the Hawai'i State Department of Heahh Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), Queen's is coimnitted to helping underserved women access regular mammogram and cervical cancer screenings, including breast exams, pelvic exams and Pap tests. To be eligible, women must meet program

criteria whieh include: age between 50 and 64 years old, be unin-

sured or underinsured; and have an ineome at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Women between the ages of 40 to 49 years or older than 65 and not enrolled in Medicare Part B may also be eligible. The program is focused on providing assistance to Native Hawaiian, Filipina and/or Paeihe Islander women. All
