City seeks 2013 lei queen

The search is on for the City and County of Honolulu's next lei queen. The postmark deadline to apply for the 85th annual lei queen isJan. 11,2013. Applicants must be female

between 31 to 54 years old by March 2, when the queen will be selected at Kapolei Hale. Judging will be based on kumuhana o ka lei (lei-making skills; contestants will have one hour to make a lei on site), kūlana o ka wahine (poise and personality); 'ōlelo Pelekane and 'ōlelo Hawai'i (speaking in both English and Hawaiian); and hula 'auana (modern hula). The lei queen and court will represent the city at the annual Lei

Day Celebration on May 1, 2013, at Kapi'olani Park as well as other formal events. The first Lei Day was in 1927 and celebrated in downtown Honolulu with a few people wearing lei. The next year, Mayor Charles Arnold crowned Nina Bowman the first lei queen. Applications are available online at honoluluparks.com.
