Burial Notices

Notice to interested parties is HEREBY GIVEN that human skeletal remains (designated site 50-30-08-2074:A) were discovered on the seaward side of Kūhiō Highway in the lands of Waipuna'ula, 'lli , Keālia Ahupua'a, Kawaihau District, Kaua'i (Tax Map Key: 4-7-03: 1, north portion) near the former site of Land Commission Award 8833:3 to Kiaipa. The remains were determined to be Hawaiian, and proper treatment shall occur in accordance with Chapter 6E, Hawai'i Revised Statutes, Section 43.5, regarding unmarked burial sites. The decision whether to preserve in plaee or disinter and relocate the human remains shall be made by the Kaua'i/Ni'ihau Island Burial Council. The State Historic Preservation Division is requesting Persons having any knowledge of the identity or history of these human skeletal remains to immediately contact Mr. Kana'i Kapeliela, Cultural Historian, at the State Historic Preservation Division located at 555 Kakuhihewa Building, 601 Kamokila Boulevard, Kapolei, Hawai'i 96707 (Telephone: (808) 692-8037 or (808) 6928015; Fax (808) 692-8020), to present information regarding appropriate treatment of the unmarked human remains. Individuals responding must be able to adequately demonstrate lineal and/or cultural connections to the human remains or individuals onee buried in coastal Keālia Responses must be received within 30 days following publication. ■

All persons having information eoneeming unmarked burials outside of designated cemeteries in the Land of Kahuā 2, (entire Kahuā originally granted to Victoria Kamāmalu as LCA 7713), North Kohala District, Island of Hawai'i, north of Kawaihae Harbor, within TMK:3-5-9-01:7, are hereby requested to contact the following persons: Mrs. Ruby McDonald, Liaison, Office of Hawaiian Affairs (West Hawai'i); (808) 3297368, 75-5706 Hanama Plaee, Suite 107, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740; Dr. Paul H. Rosendahl, Principal Archaeologist, PHRI, (808) 969-1763, 224 Waianuenue Ave., Hilo, HI 96720; and/or Mr. Kamana'o Mills, Reinterment Specialist, Burial Sites Program, DLNR-State Historic Preservation Division, (808) 587-0010, 33 South King St., Rm. 155, Honolulu, HI 96813. The owner of the parcel intends to preserve in plaee, in accordance with a plan to be approved by the Hawaii Island Burial Council, all previously unmarked graves present within the parcel. Contact must be made within thirty days of publication of this notice, and informants must provide information adequately demonstrating descent from the Native Hawaiian remains, or descent from ancestors buried in the same ahupua'a or district as the human remains. ■
