Representatives of the 25 th īnfantry Division (Light) and U,S, ,Army Hawai'i met with members of the Nānākuli and Wai'anae eommunity on April 9 and 13 , īn four-hour meetings , more than 100 residents commented on the issues they want the Army to address in its preparation of an environmental impact statement on the
impacts of military training activities at Mākua Military Reservation, Concerns expressed included: ensuring the preservation of archaeological sites, flora and fauna, taking fail-safe precautionary measures during transport of explosives and live-fire training exercises, and assessing the current and long-term impact of explosive chemicals on ground and offshore water resources, The "scoping meetings" to obtain public participation in the Army's EĪS process were mandated under a
Oct, 4 consent decree that also requires the ,Army to complete its EIS by Oct. 2004.
