The process of creating a polltical entity for Natlve Hawaiians was the subject of a meeting at QLCC in Honolulu In June. Facltltated by Corbett Kalama, the lnltlal meeting spawned subsequent gatherlngs at the Center for Hawaiian Studies at U.H. Mānoa, According to Sen. Akaka at the May 3 1 meetlng of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, the establish- : ment of a Hawaiian governmental entlty to interact with Ihe federal government is essential. Even if the billis adopted by Congress, no federai recognition wiil occur until a forma! relationship is establlshed between the federal government and a recognized, Hawailan govemmental entity, created by the peopie. ■
