īn July, participants in the 36-year-old White House Fellowship program visited OHA and met with Chairperson Haunani Apoliona, Trustee Oz Stender and Information Specialist Manu Boyd. This year's class of 15 fellows, including Ray Jefferson from Hawai'i, elected to study Native Hawaiian issues among other topics. The group spent a week in Hawai'i, and also met with the staff of the University of Hawai'i Center for Hawaiian Studies, Mālama Mākua, Kamehameha Schools and the Hansen's Disease Center on Moloka'i. Established by President Lyndon Johnson, the year-long program is designed to groom those with leadership potential. Alumni from the program include Secretary of State Colin Powell, Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao and former City Council Chair Mufi Hanneman. Applications for the fellowship are due Feb. 1.
