Ka 'Aha Hula 'O Hālauaola, the first-ever intemational conference on hula, is scheduled for July 29-Aug. 4, 2001, in Hilo. Sponsored by the Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation and the Lālākea Foundation, the event will accommodate 100 kumu hula and hula practitioners who will share knowledge and traditions through workshops, panel presentations, exhibitions and field trips. The goal of the conference is to elevate the art of hula, particularly in the intemational arena, beyond entertainment. The fee for the conference is $300. A three-day pre-conference workshop titled "Nā Ponohula," for an additional $100, will cover instmment, costume and adornment making. Training workshops in Hawai'i and on the continent have already brought together dozens of po'e hula to

& leam chants and protocols that will be utilized at the conference. Workshops are open to anyone interested, regardless of experience level, and will be held at the U.H.
