Kuʻuipo: The sweetheart of Hawaiian music

By Manu Boyd # T^^p%Kumukahi's | i ^ahenahe perfor- * **•" m manee is captured yet , i. , , - * ^gain on disk, and, as ft/ always, she's oh so sweet. With a title that makes perfect sense, "5o Sweet " is a eolleeīion of musical vignettes that showcase her vocal diversity from sultry strains to lofty lilts. Known for her rich mezzo soprano and attention to Hawaiian language detail, Kumukahi has garnered several Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including female vocalist of the year and haku mele for Hawaiian language composition.

Arrangements are flowing with crisp harmonies featuring long-time musical associates William "Baba" Alimoot and noted performer and 'ukulele maker, Chris Kamaka. A nostalgic air prevails with the inelusion of Greg Sardinha's steel guitar, a trademark on Kumukahi's recordings. Selections are longer than the usual air-play fare, as the majority of cuts are medleys. The CD is a veritable show, with themes that transport the listener to favorite places from Kumukahi's hometown of Hilo to Nōhili's "barking sands." A bouquet of floral tunes will delight you — " Pretty Red Hibis-

cus," " My Sweet Gardenia Lei," " Beautiful 'llima" and "Nā Pua Lei 'llima." Kumukahi climaxes her musical tour with " The Beauty of Mauna Kea," " Poli 'ahu" and "The Snows ofMauna Kea." Kumu Hula Karen Ka'ohulani Aiu sums up the project saying, 'So Sweef is a musical tribute to just a few designed medleys that are loved and depict one special moment and event of the artists who perform it." Enjoy the chicken-skin offerings of "So Sweet," and reflect on the beauty and magic of our islands. For more information, contact Ke'alohi Records at 923-4646. ■
