During his vacation on Kaua'i, Vice-President A1 Gore officiated at ceremonies eommemorating the Hanalei River's Ameiiean Heritage River Designation. Only 12 rivers in the United States have received this designation. The federal government will soon appoint a "river navigator" to coordinate all interests relating to the river and manage the resource. "I would say this is an opportunity to get everything done up front and from the beginning rather than wait for problems to develop," said Colin Kippen, deputy administrator and former laiid officer for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. "The interests of Native Hawaiians in the river will be identified and protected."
