Status of Native Hawaiians

On July 9, 1997, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced that Native Hawaiians may continue to be considered as "Asian or Pacific Islander" under the federal government and administration for statistical and reporting purposes . That includes statistics taken only onee every ten years. U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka has tried to include native Hawaiians in the same category as American Indians and Alaskan Natives under OMB Directive No. 15, the federal guideline that controls racial and ethnic statistics. The OMB is asking for final public comments that will be due no later than September 8, 1997.
