Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve to create plan
The Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission is required by law to manage the reserve in trust for the future native Hawaiian sovereign entity. KIRC plans to manage the reserve so that a pristine oeean with a healthy reef ecosystem is the foundation whieh will support the island. KIRC is presently preparing an Oeean Management Plan for the island reserve. The major objectives are to evaluate the threat posed by unexploded ordinances (UXO) within the two mile radius of the island, and to develop management methods for Kaho'olawe's fisheries. KIRC will hold public meetings on eaeh island regarding the . draft for this plan this fall. The final plan is expected to be finished by the end of 1996. Kaho'olawe is a pu'uhonua (refuge) and a wahi pana (sacred plaee) where native Hawaiian cultural practices ean flourish. KIRC would like to manage the reserve for the preservation and practice of Hawaiian spiritual, historical and educational purposes.
KIRC invites all interested persons to participate in the development of this Master Plan. For more information on O'ahu eall 586-0761.
