A Classic of Hawaiian literature back in print
James McGuire' s journal recounting the travels of Queen Kapi'olani and Lili'uokalani to Queen Victoria's 1887 Jubilee, is now available from 'Ahahui 'Ōlelo Hawai'i. A collectors' item and classic literature to Hawaiian language students, the reprint of this Hawaiian-written journal by James McGuire, a member of the entourage, relates telling scenes of meetings between the two royal houses, and of the English reception of the first female monarch to cross two oceans. A limited number of copies were printed in 1938 and most have been lost. The McGuire fam-
ily whieh survives to this day gave permissionfor the reprint. It is an excellent source of native literature. What follows is from the prefaee ofthe book whieh was written by M. Puakea Nogelmeier.
