Shut down Kamehameha Schools for good!

This Ietter is in response to an article in the Nov. 5, 1995 Star-Bulletin-Advertiser by the chairman of the Honolulu Advertiser. In his article he calls my King (Kamehameha) a thief for "stealing" land. My king united the islands only to succumb to the white invader. My Princess (Bernice Pauahi Bishop) established.an educational institution that was to be operated by independent, wise and concemed people, chosen by a court of "law" and not stipulating that the tmstees be Hawaiian. In her wisdom she

established a legacy, not only unique to Hawai'i and America, but, in all probability, unique to this world. The chairman's article indicates that we must obey the law and allow this legalized cheating to proceed unhindered for the benefit of the majority and let the minoiity be damned. The best revenue for Kamehameha Schools is its 'āina, our 'āina. The spirit of my princess and her ancestors are in this 'āina and eaeh sale weakens her and weakens us and eventually will be felt by all Hawaiians. When the 'āina is gone, the 'uhane (the spirit) dies. Eventually, the ehaiiman seems to want to close Kamehameha Schools, because surely without its funding we will need to appeal to the government and the puhlie. So close Kamehameha Schools and let the puhlie schools piek up the burden of educating the Hawaiians. Is this a better education than Kamehameha ean offer? I. Manu Ayau, KS '64
