Health care reform and native Hawaiians
As plans for national heahh care reform make their way through debate in Congress, native Hawaiian health systems are closely monitoring proposals to ensure that services to native Hawaiians under the federally funded Native Hawaiian Health Care Act are not endangered. Dr. Philip Lee, Assistant Secretary for Heahh, U.S. Department of Heahh and Human Services, met June
18 with representatives of Papa Ola Lōkahi, and members of the native Hawaiian heahh systems statewide. They asked for continued support of the act, whieh funds outreach and other services to native Hawaiians, and that the special needs of indigenous people, in particular the elderly, not be overlooked in a strict medical and eeonomie heahh plan.
