King Kamehameha Hula Compeition
The 20th Annual King Kamehameha Hula Competition was helel on June 25 and 26 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena. The competition was sponsored by the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs provided 'umeke and ipu heke to the hula winners and a lei hulu to the first-place chanter. Twenty-four hālau and nine chanters from across the state, California, and Japan participated in the twoday competition whieh aimed to promote and encourage serious study and research of both the traditional and contemporary mele and hula by offering awards and puhlie recognition through competition. The following awards and presentations were made:
The State eouneil on Hawaiian Heritage's Order of Distinction was presented to Pat Namaka Bacon in recognition of her contributions to the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaian eulture. Nā Leo Mele: The Chanter's Art Foundation presented cash awards to the following ho'opa'a who demonstrated exceptional drumming techniques. Kumu Hula Kalani Akana of Ka Pā Hula Ka Lani. Kumu Hula 0'Brian Eselu of Nā Wai 'Ehā O Puna Kumu Hula Sonny Ching of Hālau Nā Mamo O Pu'uanahulu Kumu Hula Cy Bridges of Hui Ho'oulu Aloha Kumu Hula No'eau Tagalog of the Men and Women of Ka Wai Kahena.
