Vote your future on Nov. 3

by Deborah L. \Vard Editor. Ka Wai Ola O OHA This November 1992 special election issue of Ka Wai Ola O OHA features eandKlates for the Nov. 3 election: OHA, federal, state and county mayoral races. Candidates were invited to present their qualifications and goals for public office, and to respond to the following questions: •Whai do you feel is the most pressing problem facing Hawaiians today? How would you solve it? • What w ould you do to make Congress and the Administration recognize and carry out the federal tnist responsibility to Native Hawaiians? In addition, OHA candidates were asked to answer the following questions: "How will you ensure that OHA promptly receives from the state its full settlement

of past-due revenues from the ceded lands trust?" and "How should OHA spend the money?" We wanted to acquaint OHA voters with candidates running for election so you could make a more informed ehoiee on eleeiion day. Candidates were mailed the questionnaire and follow up calls were made to ensure their participation. Ka Wai Ola also encourages OHA voters to eall or mect candidates and ask them about the issues that are important to your community. How do they plan to work on your behalf, if elected? OHA voters may note from reading the candidate responses, as well as the following articles in this issue, that there is increased public eoneem and growing support for Hawaiian rights. Tohelpour readers stay abreast of developments, this

issue contains: • responses ffom the four political parties in Hawai'i to Ka Wai Ola O OHA's questions on Hawaiian rights; and • a roundup of current federal, state and county legislation affecting Native Hawaiians. To those who may feel their vote doesn't matter, the tide may be tuming for Hawaiians as never before. What is important to your fumre and your family? What do you want to see happen for Hawaiians in the next few critical years? Govemment resonds to voters, not nonvoters. Make sure the leaders you elect with the power of your vote will be the ones who will work for the results you want to see happen. Now is the time to vote for your future. OHA voters, be sure to ask for your OHA ballot along with your otherr general election ballots.
