Punana Leo benefit set June 13
Na Makua O Ka Punana Leo proudly present their seventh annual benefit fundraiser, "Ho'omau 1992," from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Bishop Museum. Ho'omau translated literally means "to continue," and refers here to the use of the immersion method of perpetuating the Hawaiian language in the Punana Leo preschools. This year, in honor of the International Year of the Family, Ho'omau will be an enhanced program. It will feature some of Hawaii's top entertainers in a stage program, and also bring together a blend of cultural activities such as makahiki festival games, hands-on crafts, storytelling, demonstrations, exhibits, ono food and fun for the whole familv.
This year's Ho'omau theme is "E malama i na kupuna," take care of the kupuna. Admission will be free to persons 60 years or older, as well as for keiki age 5 and under. Tickets in advance are $5 or $5.95 at the gate. This includes admission to regular Bishop Museum exhibits. Since Punana Leo encourages parents and children to speak in Hawaiian, the emphasis of Ho'omau will be to encourage families and participants to speak Hawaiian. Students of Hawaiian language, kupuna, teachers and native speakers are invited to eome and enjoy this speeial day. Even persons who don't speak Hawaiian or who only know a few words ean join in with the help of some language lessons on the program of events. Ho'omau committee chair Kanani Kaye is also looking for individuals or groups to be kako'o (helpers) to run activities or booths. To volunteer eall Kaye at 377-2381 (leave a message).
