Mahalo for kokua

The trustees and staff of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs wish to thank the many businesses, organizations and individuals who generously contributed materials, their time, labor, and most importantly, their aloha, to making the OHA float in the Aloha Week Festival Parade a reality. Without these contributions OHA's first-ever participation in this highly public event would not have been possible. OHA's presence was intended to highlight the 10th year of its creation to act for the betterment of all Hawaiians. As the festival parade took plaee, this issue of Ka Wai Ola was going to press and therefore includes only a partial list of supporters and contributors. Next month's issue will include a complete list to thank all who contributed to this ambitious event. OHA wishes to thank Matson Navigation Company and Aloha Airlines for major donations of in-kind services and materials. Matson donated warehouse space at Sand Island for float construction, lumber and other materials to construct the float, use of a refrigerated container to keep floral supplies fresh, and the technical assistance of riggers and electricians. Aloha Airlines donated airfreight services to fly in flowers donated by neighbor island florists and individuals. Major floral donations were received from: Paradise Park, Hawaiian Heart, ine. (Big Island), Francine Palama (Hilo), Irmalee Pomroy (Kaua'i), Isaac and Gladys Kanoe (Maui), Val Mendez of Punalu'u Flower Farm, the estate of Peter Saffery at Maunawili, and flowers and leis from Mili Ing. Special thanks also to the devoted construction crew of carpenters Ted Talbert, Cathy and Roy Brooks, welders Bob Mowry and Harold Meheula, and sound engineer Elliot Dela Cruz. Special acknowledgements and mahalo also go to Melva Ching and sister Olivia Chong and their mother Helen Ching, who wove the canoe's lauhala sail.
