On Te Waka Toi:
Te Waka Toi, the Council for Maon and South Pacific Arts, assists Maori and South Pacific artists and performers in the development of their arts. Assistance to Maori artists and performers comes through the Maori Arts Committee. Subcommittees support weaving and carving artists, as well as music, dance and drama performers. Programs also promote the Maon language, marae decoration, tutoring for performing arts such as haka and poi, and community-based projects. The eouneil also supports the artists and writers group Nga Puna Waihuna. South Pacific art committees support visual and language artists and performers, costume and instrument-making, traditional carving and canoe-building projects. Research, recording of or publication about Maori and South Pacific arts, and conservation projects are also supported.
