Honokahua is blessed Jan. 8

The blessing of the ground at Honokahua, Maui, was held Monday, Jan. 8, in preparation for the reinterment of Native Hawaiian remains whieh took plaee later that month. Among those participating were Pua Kanaka'ole Kanahele, and the Rev. David Kaalakea. The blessing was consistent with tne revised Honokahua Agreement feached between The Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hui Alanui o Makena whieh is a Maui community group, Kapalua Land Company and the state. More than 1,000 Native Hawaiian remains were disinterred in 1988 during the site preparation for the proposed RitzCarlton Hotel at Honokahua. After purchase of a permanent easement and relocation of the hotel, an area at Honokahua was set aside as a permanent burial area in perpetuity. All remains whieh had been removed are being returned and will be reburied at the site with appropriate ceremony.
