This dramatic aerial view of the coastal Wahaula Heiau in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was taken in August 1989. It shows the lava flow from the Kilauea eruption nearing the walls of the 13th century heiau. Since that time, the lava has moved between the two major structures at right, going right up to the walls. The flow eontinues to surround the heiau and may soon engulf it. A Bishop Museum exhibit, "Inside Active Volcanoes: Kilauea and Mt. St. Helens" will begin Feb. 10 and continue through Apnl 20 in the new Castle building. Photo by U.S. Geological Seruice, J.D.
