Year of Hawaiiʻs Women proclaimed
Twenty years ago, on July 2, 1970, Gov. John Burns signed Act 190 into law thereby creating the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women. The commission's eoneem is improving the lives of women in Hawai'i. In recognition of the 20 yearanniversary of both the act and the commission, Gov. John Waihee has proclaimed 1990 as The Year Of Hawaii's Women. The Hawaii state commission and four county commissions on the status of women are planning events and activities during the year including a travelling seminar with information on issues such as health care, education, housing, domestic violence, job training, child care, workplaee policies, government, the importance of
voting, and organizations available to assist women. The celebration, according to Waihee's proclamation, will highlight the importance of "mentoring" — women helping other women and women helping young girls — to achieve their goals and objectives. The governor declared the year should include a gala event celebrating the women of Hawai'i. LaLi Hing, chairwoman of the commission, said a celebration is being planned for September at the
Blaisdell Center during whieh 90 of thestate'soutstanding women will be recognized and honored. In March, the commission will observe Women's History Month and unveil a eommemorative painting by Diana Hansen-Young.
