Hula contest set

Halau (hula schools) whieh want to participate in the 1990 King Kamehameha Hula Competition, June 22-23 have until Feb. 15 to submit entry forms. For information eall the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage at 536-6540. Keahi Allen, executive director of the eouneil, said this year the program eaeh night at the Neal Blaisdell arena will feature a mix of kahiko (traditional) and 'auana (modern) hula styles and chant. In previous years kahiko and 'auana styling had their own nights. 'Auana performances must retlect tne theme or "plaee names of the island of Hawai'i." Allen pointed out that modern land development has created new pseudo-Hawaiian and even nonHawaiian names that ignore traditional Hawaiian plaee names. "If we don't use the traditional names, we will forget them," she said. Allen is the daughter of the late Napua Stevens Poire, a well-known Hawaiian entertainer and expert on Hawaiian music, dance and culture.
