Language Day set for Kauaʻi

Kauai's own Hawaiian Language Day is Saturday, Feb. 17 and a celebration will be held at Olu Pua Gardens, Kalaheo. All the events will be eonducted in the Hawaiian language. This 10th annual celebration of La Ho'oulu 'Olelo will center on the subject of health starting at 8 a.m. It is expected to end in late midafternoon. The theme is E Ola Mau Na Pua (That the flowers may live forever). There will be four presentations during the day. Guest speakers will talk about ho'oikaika kino (exercise), mea'ai (food and nutrition), lomilomi (massage) and ke kino (the body).

A spokesman said that this year people will be grouped according to their fluency in the Hawaiian language. The day will feature activities for the children and luneh is included in the registration fee, $5 for adults and $3 for children. The popular annual kukala, (auction) will be conducted in Hawaiian by Ilei Beniamina. Overall master of ceremonies for the day will be Moses Keale, OHA trustee. For tickets, reservations or information about the Kaua'i Hawaiian Language Day, people may eall 332-8019 evenings between 7 and 9:30 p.m.
