Kupu: He Mau Moʻolelo No Ke Au Hou

There is now a Hawaiian alternative to Jack and the Beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty and other traditional children's stories. The alternative is Kupu: He Mau Mo'olelo No Ke Au Hou (Stories for A New Era), a Hawaiian storybook recently published by Ho'olako (Year of the Hawaiian).

Two and a half years in the making, Kupu features nine original children's stories written by and about Hawaiians. In the genre of Aesop's fables, eaeh story stresses a moral lesson and focuses on a Hawaiian cultural concept such as laulima (eooperation, 'ohana (family), kokua (helping) or aloha 'aina (love of the land). Characters like lazy Limahana, the pua'a who refused to help his family work, and Ka'imi, the little boy who wanted all the wisdom in the world, help to bring alive these Hawaiian cultural concepts and values in a way that contemporary children ean relate to and that everyone in Hawai'i ean enjoy. As an added feature, eaeh of these charming

stories has been translated into Hawaiian by Aunty Sarah Nakoa, so every story appears in both Hawaiian and English. And Kupu sports lively illustrations by noted Hawaiian artist 'Imaikalani Kalahele.

Kupu was conceived and written by a project team consisting of Kalama Akamine, Puanani Fer-nandez-Akamine, Leina'ala Kaina and Ke'ala Kwan and Sarah Nakoa. Advisors included LeRoy Akamine, Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell, Marsha Heu Bolson and Puanani Woo.
