lnterpret Hawaii Series Explore Local Heritage
Kapiolani Community College's "Interpret Hawaii" program in association with the Hawaii Maritime Center and Mission Houses Museum, announces the next series of its on-going, walking tours of Honolulu and travel industry courses.
The walking tour program is entitled "Ka'ao O Honolulu" and encompasses 13 different themes including maritime history, supernatural legends, tales of the ali'i, the history of Waikiki and Kaimuki, the 1893 Revolution debated by costumed role-players and an unusual "mystery" tour where a "gumshoe" leads you on the trail of famous crime cases of the 1920's and 1930's. The fall series also includes several new tours including a tour of Oahu cemetery, an excursion in time to "Little Tokyo" of the thirties, a revisit to the social galas of the 19th century and a "living history" walk through Honoiulu during World War II.
All tours cost: $5.00/Adults, $2.00/Children and students. Hawaii residents, 60 years of age or older are entitled to a $1 discount. Pre-registration and advance payment are required. Space is limited on eaeh tour to 20 people so act now to reserve space on the tour of your ehoiee. Tours are subject to change or cancellation due to poor weather.
The "Interpret Hawaii," visitor industry training courses are designed to enrich the knowledge and skills of hotel employees, tour guides, tour escorts, travel agents, museum educators and docents, tour designers and anyone interested in Hawaiian cultural or natural history. These short-term, noncredit courses provide historical, cultural and natural history background while strengthening skills of presentation, hospitality and creative storytelling. Newcomers to Hawaii are encouraged to register for the courses as a way to be introduced to the heritage of Hawaii. Workshop titles are: "Hawaii No Ka Oi," "The Island Way: Discovering the Aloha Spirit," "A View From the Water," "Fact or Fancy?," "Legends of Oahu," "Creative Island Storytelling," and "What Do I Say Next?"
