Search Continues for Stories, Documents
By Earl Neller Cultural Specialist I need the help of the kupunas. Over the years there have been times when archaeological sites have been destroyed or damaged by construction projects because the locations and significance of the sites were not well known. In some cases, apparently, no one was still alive who knew anything about the sites. I have been searching for information about certain historical sites for years
without luek. I thought, perhaps, that some of the readers of Ka Wai Ola O OHA might be familiar with the sites and have some information to contribute. That's what this story is all about. I need the help of knowledgeable Hawaiians. Maps, photographs, and stories are needed. Do you, or does anyone you know, have information on these places? Mahalo for your kokua. Maunawili Stones. What were the names and locations of the heiau at Kahe Point, Brown's Camp, Ko'olina, Waimanalo, Kalaeloa, and One'ula?
Kapalama Heiau. In Kapalama, in the valley next to Kamehameha Schools, are some stone ruins, and the remains of a prisoner-of-war eamp from World War II. There is also a garden terrace onee leased to a farmer named DeCambra, and a basalt rock quarry. What are the names of these sites, and what is their history? Where are the heiau in Kapalama? has located a few heiau sites and springs in Ka'alaea. What were the names of these sites, and what is their history? Luluku Heiau and Springs. A number of heiau and flowing springs have been found during recent archaeological surveys in Luluku, Kane'ohe. There are some pinnaele rocks, and a legendary plaee called Kama'ikola. What are the names of these sites, and what is their history?
Koloa House Site. At the Kiahuna Golf Resort, Kaua'i ean be found the ruins of a rock-walled house site that was onee the home of Mary Rose Nakai and her family. What is the story of this woman and her family? Who is buried in the crypt next to the house ruins? These questions may one day be answered, with the public's help. Please eall me if you have any documentation — maps, old photographs, plaee names, and histories. Mahalo.
