Restoration Day at Liliʻuokalani Statue

Restoration Day's 145th anniversary, Ka La Ho'i Ho'i Ea, will be observed at 12 noon Sunday, July 31, at the statue of Queen Lili'uokalani between the State Capitol and the Archives building. Sponsored by Na 'Oiwi O Hawai'i, the program will include an 'awa ceremony, potluck pienie and four native Hawaiian guest speakers who have been arrested because of their support for the ongoing struggle for native rights. The scheduled speakers are Stella Pihana, Terrilee Keko'olani, Kawehi Kanui and Maxine Kahaulelio. According to a release from 'Imaikalani Kalahele, Na 'Oiwi hopes the event will educate people about the injustices committed against the Hawaiian kingdom in 1843 and during the subsequent overthrow of the government of Lili'uokalani in 1893. "The commemoration," Kalahele explains, "also displays Na 'Oiwi's commitment to Ea Hawai'i (Hawaiian self-government) and our determination to work towards the return of our ancestral lands, culture, language and spiritual essence."
