Academy Features Outrigger Canoes

The ingenious craftsmanship and high art whieh characterize outrigger canoes of the Pacific is the subject of a free lecture on Saturday Mar. 26, 4 p. m. at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The speaker, Philip Dark, is emeritus professor of art at Southern Illinois University and Research Associate at the Field Museum in Chicago. He will also illustrate the process of building and decorating the Kilenge canoes in New Guinea. Dark is editor of the Pacific Arts Newsletter and is on the executive committee of the Pacific Arts Association. He is author of numerous articles and catalogs in addition to books on the arts of the Benin and Kilenge peoples.
