Workshop Has lmpressive Schedule
Four workshop sessions covering a wide area in the writing field are featured in the first "Art of Writing Workshop" Feb. 14-15 at the Sheraton Makaha Resort. This is a Ho'olako 1987 project chaired by Velma Kekipi of Puanani Kini's Ho'olako Publications Committee. Other participating agencies are the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawaii Chinese History Center, Na Ho'okama A Pauahi (Kamehameha Schools post high school scholarship and counseling program), Native Hawaiian Library Project (Alu Like ine.) and the Waianae Coast Culture and Art Society ine. Goals of the workshop are to encourage Hawaiians to express themselves through writing and to leam writing skills. Registration is at 8 a.m. Feb. 14 with opening activities an hour later. The first workshops in Session A are slated for 11 a.m. with Session B on tap at 12:10 p.m. Sessions C and D are on the docket for 2:30 pm. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Kini. There will also be talk story time with OHA Trustee and Ho'olako President Thomas K. (Unele Tommy) Kaulukukui Sr., Publisher Benjamin E. Bess, Sam Kaai, Kekipi, Kini, Mahealani Merryman, Seifers, Soares, Maunakea, Akana, Estomago, Louise Kong and Silva. Among workshop subject matters are Script Writing for Video, Parts I and II; Legislative Writing: Getting your Message Across; Writing a Family History or Genealogy; Discovering Your "Voice"; Composing Hawaiian Songs; Na Kakau Mo'olelo (The Story Writers); Copywriting and Publishing Music; Writing for and Managing a Newsletter; Grants Writing; and Business Writing. A keynote address by Agnes K. Cope, executive director of Waianae Coast Culture and Art Society ine., will be held at luneh on Saturday. She will speak on "Ka Po'e Kahiko O Waianae." There will also be entertainment. The closing day activities on Sunday will include sunrise services by Na Kupuna, creative circles exercises, workshop sharing and other mana'o.
