Hawaiian Con-Con Officers Elected
Attorney Mililani Trask of Honolulu was elected chairperson of the Native Hawaiian Constitutional Convention held Jan. 15-18 at Malia Puka O Ka Lani Church's parish hall in Keaukaha. Other officers are Genesis Lee Loy, vice chairperson; Meiling K.E. Akuna, secretary and Henry Auwae, kupuna. Patrick Kahawai'ola'a wasappointedsergeant-at-arms with Kamakahukiokalani as his assistant.
The sesston opened with the true spirit of aloha whieh was expressed in the pule said in the native Hawaiian Ianguage. Among native Hawaiian officials in attendance were Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustees Moanikeala Akaka, Hawaii; Manu Kahaialii, Maui; and Clarence F.T. Ching, Oahu. Also, Kahu Ronald L. Keawehawe; Josiah Hoohuli, president of Ho'ala Kanawai; and Wendell Kaehuaea, owner of Hawaiian radio station KAHU on Hawaii, 1060 on the AM dial. The four-day Con-Con resulted in the drafting of the framework of the Constitution upon whieh the interim government of the Sovereign Nation of Hawaii will be formed. This drafting of the Constitution was in response to a request of a sovereign people to reestablish their nation whieh was illegally overthrown on Jan. 17, 1893. Mitsuo Uyehara, project director of the Native Hawaiian Land Trust Task Force, was honored by all for his dedication and aloha toward the Hawaiian people of the Nation of Hawaii. — Meiling K.E. Akuna.
