CELEBRATE THE HAWAIIAN - 1987
HO'OLAKO We Are Enriched
The Ho'olako logo design shown here was created out of the concept of Wakea and Papa who in Hawaiian mythology created the Hawaiian Islands. "Celebrate the Hawaiian" is a happening that requires the depth and origin of our cultural birth. It was designed by Momi Cazimero who has her own graphics business and serves on the "Ho'olako 1987" committee. Her descriptive of the logo follows.
The design symbolizes the sky and earth whieh represent Wakea and Papa. The island formation depicts volanic eruptions and signifies passages of time. It further suggests growth, stability and implantation. The linear design provides an opportunity to blend and merge the island and sky. This translation reinforces the symbolism of unity and provides a fluid appearance. This fluidity suggests water, atmosphere and space. It further provides animation whieh is visually provocative. The type style was selected to enhanee the design and suggest refinement. Refinement is an important consideration because of the theme. . . .ENRICHMENT.
To present a cohesive symbol, the logo design is supported by the theme "HO'OLAKO — We are Enriched." There is a need to define Ho'olako. This clarifies and enhances the theme and removes vague or erroneous interpretations. "Celebrate the Hawaiian 1987" designates an event and date. Ho'olako is unique to this particular celebration, therefore, the logo has been simplified. This is important because of the variety of ways the symbol will be applied whether it be to programs, books, posters, stationary or T-shirts. The symbol is strong enough to stand on its own because of its simplicity and abstraction. It will compliment other elements without distracting from them.
"I feel it is important to incorporate the symbol to all elements that are related to the event. This will make a cohesive statement; will strengthen the event; will identify the participants; and gather support," Cazimero explained. "HO'OLAKO — We Are Enriched," focuses on what we are as Hawaiians. It recalls our rich heritage, eelebrates our growth and inspires our future.
