Haku Mele O Hawaii Volume XII Out Soon

The 12th volume of Haku Mele O Hawaii, a eompilation of representative poems written by Hawaii's public school students who had classes in poetry writing under the Poets-in-the-Schools Program during the 1984-86 school years, should be available soon at the Department of Education's Office of Instructional Services. Only limited copies are printed for selected distribution. Students from grades K-12, totalling more than 7,000 in all school districts, participated in the program during those two years, "writingpoetry of mueh insight and beauty," as described by DOE Superintendent Francis Hatanaka. These young poets provide enjoyment and inspiration for those who annually get to read these volumes. Poets-in-the-Schools is a component of the Artists-in-the-Schools Program funded by the DOE and State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in Federal/State Partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. Office of Hawaiian Affairs Administrator Kamaki A. Kanahele III is a member of the latter body whieh is cited for its contribution to the program. Other organizations are also singled out for their eontributions during the two years covered in Volume XII.
