Prince Lot Festival Draws 12 Hula Halau
Twelve hula halau, including one eaeh from Kaua'i, Moloka'i and Lana'i, will dance ancient and modern hula for the entertainment of those attending the Ninth Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival Saturday, July 19, on the hula mound at Moanalua Gardens. The biggest event of the year for the non-profit Moanalua Gardens Foundation begins at 9:30 a.m. and will continue all day, probably ending around 4:30 p.m. There will also be displays, demonstrations of Hawaiian arts, crafts and games and food and refreshment eoncession stands. There is no admission for the event but volunteers will be asking for donations for T-shirts and MGF and they'll be passing out programs and dispensing iee cold water, giving directions and directing traffic. It should be a great day for hula lovers. Performing groups include: • Coline Aiu's Halau Hula O Maiki. • Mililani Allen's Halau Hula 'O Mililani. • Roselle Bailey's Kahiko Halapa'i Hula Alapa'i from Kaua'i. • Keoni Jenny's Halau Hula O Kawaimaluhia.
• Frank Palani Kahala's Gentlemen of Maluikeao and Ladies of Kahanakealoha. • John Ka'imikaua's Halau Hula 'O Kukuna'okala. • Sarah Kalau'awa's Halau 'O Kalaha'ehae. • Rachel Kamakana's Hula Halau 'O Moloka'i. • Elaine Kaopuiki's Na Hula 'O La'i Kealoha, from Lana'i. • Darrell Lupenui's Men of Waimapuna andKe'ala O Ka Laua'e. • Victoria Holt Takamine's Pua Ali'i llima. • John Kaha'i Topolinski's Ka Pa Hula Hawai'i. This annual celebration of the Hawaiian culture is produced and organized by MGF with financial assistance provided by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts through the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Hosting the festival as narrators are Jalna Keala, Government and Community Affairs Officer for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and Kevin (Chubby) Mahoe, director of the Hula Academy at St. Andrews Cathedral and KCCN radio personality.
