Two OHA Staff Members Now Watch Hawaiian lssues in Washington
Lawrence K. Kamakawiwoole, who onee served as an advisory member for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and Carol Ford, a consultant specializing in arts and education management and program design and development, are OHA's two people in Washington, D.C. They are official members of the OHA staff who have been retained to keep tabs of Hawaiian issues, legislation, grants and anything else pertaining to all Hawaiian matters. They will also coordinate logistics (lodging, meeting schedules, transportation, etc.) for OHA Board of Trustee members when they are in the nation's capitol. Their first contribution under the standing eolumn head of "Mai Wakinekona (From Washington)" appears in this issue. OHA Administrator Kamaki A. Kanahele III is very high on OHA's two faraway staff members. "They are two fine and intelligent professional people who will be of great asset to OHA and Hawaiians," Kanahele said. Brief backgrounds of the two staffers follow: Larry Kamakawiwoole — Will receive Juris Doctor degree (law) from Georgetown University in December, 1986. Already has Master of Educational Foundations degree from University of Hawaii, August, 1973; Master of Divinity degree from Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif., June, 1969; Bachelor of Arts degree, UH, June, 1966. Some of his work experiences include law clerk for the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, summer 1985; Congressional intern in the office of Congressman Daniel K. Akaka, Washington, D.C., 1983 and 1984; independent research paper for Georgetown University Law Center, 1985-86 on "The Role of Large Land Estates in Hawaii and Their Impact on Government and the Economy of Haweui"; summer 1982 researcher in Hawaii State Legislative Auditor's office; 1973-74 grants researcher of the Honolulu Community Action Program. Kamakawiwoole has also served as dean of student affairs at Hawaii Loa College, 1979-81; director of the UH Ethnic Studies Program, 1972; instructor of English in Japan's Saitama Prefecture, 1976-79; UH religion and ethnic studies instructor.
In 1975, Kamakawiwoole back-packed around the world via the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is also a third rank T'ai Chi Chuan member and has belonged to.the T'ai Chi Association of Japan since 1979. Carol Ford — Her areas of competence include program development, research and analysis, writing and editing and organization. She holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. In Washington, Miss Ford: • Coordinates national conferences, meetings and workshops, including budget proposals, program design, logistics and evaluation. • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of program guidelines and grant applieations. Attends policy and grant review meetings and writes summary panel actions and recommendations. • Serves as liaison with federal and state agencies and public and private sector constituencies for projectrelated activities. • Researches and analyzes data for statistical and narrative reports. • Manages membership services program, all division and national affiliates' activities and national plaeement service. • Monitors ineome and expenditures within budgetary guidelines. • Edits and produces monthly newspaper, directories, brochures, press releases and general information. She also serves as consultant to the American Council for the Arts, New York City, N.Y.; Artists in Education Program, Nahonal Endowment for the Arts, Washington; Nahonal Assembly of State Arts Agencies, Washington; and Office of Special Projects, National Endowment for the Arts. She has been an arts management consultant since 1980 and before that was a data/research analyst, coordinator of membership services and administrative assistant/instructor in Washington and Lake Placid, N.Y. Miss Ford was also a school teacher from 1%4 to 1973 in Prince George's County, Maryland.
