Larger Baibala Hemolele Printed

The first shipment of enlarged and reprinted Hawaiian Bibles was scheduled to arrive the end of May or the first week of June, according to an announcement by Ahahui Ekalesia Hawaii, an eeumenieal organization responsible for its printing. This enlarged edition, whieh measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 inches, contains both the 01d and New Testaments and is being printed by the American Bible Society ( ABS) in cooperation with the Ahahui. The effort began back in 1979 through the need of an enlarged Bible for the residents of Lunalilo Home to read. Another need was to correct previous typographical errors (pa'i hewa). An ad hoe committee was formed by church leaders, Hawaiian language and culture teachers and University of Hawaii faculty to find ways to have the Bible reprinted.

The committee was able to raise $10,000 from loeal trusts, churches and individuals. A good portion of these funds were spent to photographically enlarge the ABS 1966 edition. The Ahahui and the ABS, through the assistance of the Hawaii Council of Churches, worked an agreement to have the Bible enlarged, reprinted and sold at a low cost. The ABS plans to print 5,000 copies. The low purchase price is $6.70 and the Bible ean be ordered through churches or bookstores. Meanwhile, volunteers familiar with the Hawaiian language are needed by the Ahahui to help proofread the effort.
