Council Honors de Silva's, Festival Winnina Hula Halau

The Honolulu City Council recently adopted a resolution honoring Kiheiand Mapuana de Silva for their work and accomplishments in hula as a performing arl

Their Halau Mohala 'llima won four first plaee awards and the overall eompetition trophy in the most recent Merrie Monarch Festival on the Big lsland. Councilman David W. Kahanu, who introduced the resolution, acknowledged the respect given to Mapuana by kumu

hula scholars for the precision, artistry and expression in performances given by her halau. Kihei de Silva, a member of The Kamehameha Schools faculty, was credited for researching and writing of the Hawaiian chants used by the halau.

1 his young Hawanan eouple, through their devoted efforts, are doing mueh to perpetuate Hawaiian cultural traditions and encourage pride throughout the islands.
