OHA SUDE SHOW PRESENTED STATEWIDE

OHA's multi-projector ceded lands slide show has been shown to almost 2,000 people since its completion late last year. The 18-minute presentation called "Hawaii's Ceded Lands, 'Aina Mo'omoku" was produced by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs Resource Development Committee, chaired by Trustee Hayden Burgess. It explains the unique concept of Hawaiian land tenure under whieh land is a gift of the gods, benefiting all, but owned by none. The presentation traces the status of land in the islands from ancient times. lt shows that the land was always held in trust for Hawaii's people and that this trust was recognized by the United States as far back as 1898 when Hawaii was annexed and the crown and government lands were "ceded" to the federal government. The slide show explains how OHA was created by the Constitutional Convention of 1978 and that the State Legislature determined that OHA should receive 20% of ceded land ineome to be used for the Hawaiian people. It also

exp!ains why OHA has been forced to appeal to the courts in order to obtain its entitlement to that ineome. The slide show has been shown to a wide variety of community and service organizations, schools, business groups and other gatherings on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and the Big lsland. Following the slide presentation, OHA Trustees and staff members provide additional information and answer questions from the audience. Additional showings are being scheduled during the next several months and the presentation is available to interested groups and individuals. ln addition, the slide show has been transferred to videotape for use in schools, libraries and in private homes. lnformation about the slide show may be obtained by calling the OHA Honolulu office at 548-8960 or by contacting an OHA representative on any island.
