Native Hawaiians were proudly represented at the Third Annual Hawaii State Snaffle Bit Futurity August 5,6,7 at New Town and Country Stables in Waimanalo. This year's ehampion is "Fresnos Windy Doc", a horse owned by George and Jamie Maioho of Molokai, ridden and shown by George Maioho. George has a pasture lot in Hoolehua DHHL subdivision, and since 1979 has managed Kapualei Ranch in Kamalo for the Austin family. George's wife is the former Jamie Lindsey of Hookamakea, Molokai who works with him on the ranch by day and in the Hotel Molokai dining room in the evening. The Futurity is a competition in whieh a horse, trainer/or rider are nominated or entered one year in advance. All horses must be 3 or 4 years old and be shown with a snaffle bit, or broken mouthpiece. The competition is judged by three accredited mainland judges on the horses' abi!ity to perform several patterned maneuvers. Last year George rode his mare, "Fresnos Docs Misty" to the State championship and won a saddle, silver buckle and prize money. Next year, 1984, after a grueling training period, George will be riding a chestnut stallion that was foaled in January, 1982. lt has surprised members of the horse community that such fine horses exist on little Molokai. The Hawaiian community ean be pleased that such versatility and expertise exists among their own.
