Senator Spark Matsunaga and Representative Daniel Akaka announced that two Hawaii community colleges have been awarded grants from the Department of Energy (DOE) for vocational training programs. These grants were issued by the Department's Office of Minority Eeonomie Impact, and are designed to provide vocational training in energy-related curricula. The awards, whieh will be going to Honolulu Community College and Hawaii Community Collegeat Hilo will total S50.000. and will benefit more than a hundred students. The Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have funds available for individuals and for the repair of public facilities in the aftermath of Hurricane Iwa. FEMA will provide Individual and Family Grants of up to S5.000 to eligible applicants. These grants are intended for indi\iduals and families w ho are unable to borrow money through con\entional sources or through the Federal Go\ernment. Thegrants may be used to make a house habitable or to purchase food and temporary shelter. FEMA will also assist families in finding temporary housing. Business owners who are unable to obtain conventional loans may also be eligible for SBA Eeonomie Injury Loans. For example, a store owner who was unable to open for business for several weeks and suffered a cash fiow problem might be eligible for an SBA Eeonomie Loan. The deadline for applying for Eeonomie Injury Loans is August 27, 1983. The interest rate is 8 percent. The deadline for applying for SBA Eeonomie Injury Loans is August 27, 1983.
