"In youth prepared for manhood"

Uncle Ph@@@ Desk

In the greatness of the world car, he found, thousands of boys and girls who earn their living in the streets. many of them sell newspapers and are called "newsboys". Often @@@ Uncle Phil heard their sh@@@ v@@@. at all hours of the day, @@@@ at the name of their newspapers. Nearly all of them are very young and i have gotten newspapers from @@@ we more than eight years old. @@@@ I will tell you @@@@@ @@@@ news boys, but now i am @@@ to tell you about another set of @@@@ boys called "boot-black". They earn their home by going up and down the streets backing peoples boots and shoes when they are wanted. @@ mary @@@ @@ see the inside of a whole @@@ @@ much of what they learn on the stets is had. Ye, taken them al @@@@ they are very @@@ like others boys only they have to look @@ @@@@@, or they would get nothing to eat nor any good place to sleep in. And now for a story or two about boot blacks.

            "Shine sir?"

And a bright, manly @@@ lad @@ nine years steep up to a gentleman in the Grand Central Deport, New York and looking up into his @@ with his large brown eyes, asked, "Shine sir?" "I want my shoes polished", said the gentleman "Then, i would be glad to shine them, sit" replied the boy.

"Have i time to @@@@ the Bal@@@@ and Ohio Train?"

"no time to lose, sir. I can give you a good job before it pulls out"

            "Certain of it?"

            "Yes, sit. Shall i Shine"

            "yes"

And in two seconds the boot black was down on his knees, and putting boy into place was at work"

"Don't let me get left," said the gentleman.

"I won't sir," replied the boy, as he worked both brushes very rapidly.

            "Whats your name?"

            "Paul Fay"

            "Is your father living"

"No, sir, he is dead, no one but mother, J, and the children. The train is going, sir"

The gentleman reached his hand in his pocket, and drawing out a silver half dollar handed it to the boy, who pulled out a lot of charge, and began to count out the right amount. The gentleman moved off toward the train fearing he would get left. before the little follow could get to him the train moved out.

Two years after the same gentleman went to New York again, on business. He had forgotten the little boot black and his forty five cents change.

As he wandered up the street the second day after his arrival, a lad walked up to him and said:

            "Were you ever here before?"

            "Yes, bubby," was the reply.

            "When?" the boy asked.

            "About two years ago."

"Didn't i shine your shoes at the Grand Central Depot?"

            "Some boy did."

"Well, i and the boy, sir, and i owe you forty-five cents. I tried to get tot the train, but i couldn't- honestly, i couldn't- and here is your money. I was afraid i would never see your again. I didn't intend to keep your money," and saying this, the boy pulled out a lot of change, and, taking forty-five cents, handed it to the gentleman.

The gentleman was so pleased with little Paul, that he adopted him and educated him, and the little boot-black grew up to be a rich gentleman, very upright and honorable.

Here is another pleasant little story about the boot-blacks, showing what kind hearts some of them have, in taking care of animals that cannot take care of themselves, and that a great many bad boys would stone to death. The story is

            Caring for a sick dog.

In a narrow street in Philadelphia there stands against the wall of one of the stores a boy, over which hands a tattered American Flag, and in which, on a soft bed of shavings, lies a poor little "yaller" dog, badly hurt. Both of his legs were broken by being run over by a watering cart. The poor little animal was not without his friends in this time of trouble. There is in the neighborhood of the street a lot of news-boys and the boot-blacks, how are not the cleanest of always the most orderly of God's creatures. but there is a great feel of good in the breasts of theses young gramins, which is shown their care of this poor, broken legged dog. here is the language in which on them told the story"

"Yes we saw the poor little whelp git run over, and the man what owned him was in a wagon, and right off, about waitin to see what was the matter. i ben us fellers packed him up, and get a boy and' fixed it up sos he could lay easy an then we all chucked in and got a horse doctor to fix his legs"

"Home much did you have to pay the doctor?"

"Well, he done it for as cheap , cause we hadn't much cast. He only charged a quarter. He said it'd be one dollar for any body else"

"How is the dog coming on now?"

"Oh well. He can most walk. We all chucks in and gist him a little milk every day, and a lot o' meat, and he knows @@@ all, and i guess he'll be all right now pretty soon. i don't know who he'll belong to when he gets well but i know if i had my left broken, i'd like somebody to take care of men like we took care of that dog."

Yes will see the word "gamins" in the story, and may not known what is means. The dictionary says a "gamin" is a neglected and unrule child in the streets. One who has to no one to take proper care of @@ and spends all his time running around the streets are some "gamin in Honolulu.
