“ Ua maluhia maoli no kahi o ka waihoia ana e hike ole ai e lilo i ka mea manao kolohe, i pane mai ai ka lunanana ma ke ano paani, me ke kuhikuhi pu ana aku i ka pahuhao.  “ Aole e lilo kena puolo pepa au i kekahi poe aihue no ka mea ua paa i ka lakaia maloko o kela pahuhao.”

MOKUNA XVIII.

            “Aohe,” wahi a ka Nila pane.

            “Hiki no.”

            “Ina pela e oluolu oe e hoakaka mai!” i noi aku ai ka lunanana.

            Molo o iwakalua-kumamaha hora!  Kahaha, i kakali hou aha ana aku hoi ia?” i pane aku ai ka Lunanana Baida me ke ano kahaha. 

            “Ae hoi, aole e oi aku, pela ko’u manaolana.”

            “Aole o’u muaolana e loaa mai ana kau pane iloko o ia manawa,”a aole no au e ae aku ana e haawi aku i manawa hou ia oe.  O keia no ka manawa kupono au e hoike mai ai i ke alahele i loaa mai ai keia mau daimana ia oe.  E hoao oe e hoopokole loa mai i kela manawa, e Mr. Nila, no kou pono keia a’u e koi aku nei; e hoao oe e hoemi loa mai i ka manawa,  No kela poe ma ka hale oihana makai ma Enelani aole o lakou haawi mai i manawa hoomaha no makou, a pehea auanei e hiki ai la ia maua ke haawi aku i manawa nou e hoakaka mai ai i kahi o ka loaa ana mai o nei mau daimana ia oe,”

            “Eia no ke kumu o ko’u nonoi ana aku la ia oe, oia keia, aole owau ko’u haku no’u iho, he poe e ae kekahi maluna ae o’u, a he kauwa hana wale aku no au malalo o lakou,” i pane mai ai ua o Mr. Nila.

            “O, hoike koke mai i keia manawa-aole ia he hana nui ma kou aoao o ka hoike ana mai, i hookahi a i elua wale no au mau mea e hoakaka mai ai ua lawa ia.  Pehea i loaa mai ai keia mau daimana ia oe?  O kou olelo wale mai no me nei la i loaa mai ai, ua lawa ia.”

            “O, aole; ke makemake nei a e huopanee iki i ka’u haina a kekahi manawa aku, ia manawa e loaa ana ka’u haina piha no ka hoike ana aku ia olua, aole i nei manawa, “ i noi hoomano mai ai ua o Mr. Nila.

            “ I ka wa hea i loaa mai ai keia mau daimana ia oe?” i ninau hou aku ai ka lunanana Baida.

            “E pono au e noi aku ia oe e noonoo i kena ninau au oiae ua apoia no hoi ia iloko o kekahi ninau e ae, “i pane mai ai o Nila me ke ano kunahihi.

            “Aohe mea pohihihi iloko o keia ninau, e oluolu mai oe.  E hoomanao pu oe eia oe imua o na makai o ke aupuni e kamailio mai nei, nolaila e hoomaopopo mai oe i keia, e Mr. Nila,” i pane aku ai ka lunanana Baida.

            “Ina pela aole hiki ia’u ke kamailio hou aku i kekahi mea i keia manawa, hana aku olua e like me ko olua makemake.  Ua hoomaopopo au i lo olua kulana ame ka olua hana, nolaila aole e lilo ana i mea no’u e hoohikileleia ai.  Hoko o kekahi puolo a’u i hoike aku nei na’u ponoi ia, mawaena o na palapala e ae a ka ahahui nana au i hoolimalima mai, e loaa iho ana ia oe kekahi waiwai makamae loa i hunaia, no ka mea oia ka waiwai maloko o ia puolo, aole anei ia i hunaia me ka malu loa e Mr. Baida!

            “Ina o kou manao ia na’u i aihue na daimana, a i ole he hoahui au no ka mea nana i aihue, aia ia i ko olua noonoo ana.  Hana aku e like me ka olua i ike ai he pono.  Ua noi mua aku nei au ia olua e haawi mai i manawa no’u e noonoo ai, iloko o na hora he iwakalua-kumamaha e loaa ana ia’u ka mea pono a’u e hana ai ko olua pohihihi no ka mea e pili ana me keia waiwai, e loaa ole iho ai kekahi manao kanalua iloko o olua nou.

            “O o ke kanaka i manaoia aia iaia ka waiwai i aihueia a malalo hoi o kona malu, na lona aku oia ua pepehiia a make maloko o ke kaaahi i ku mai ai i Panisa nei mai Ladana mai ma ka wanaao o nehinei.  O ka waiwai i manaoia ai aia maluna o kona kino aole i loaa aku.  O oe, e Mr. Nila, kekahi o na kanaka i kau pu mai ai maluna o kela kaaahi ua loaa iho la ia maua i nei manawa ma ka lua o ke ahiahi mahope iho o ka pepehiia ana o kela kanaka maluna o ke kaaaahi, a iloko o kau wahi i huna ai i loaa iho nei na waiwai i manaoia ai ua aihueia e ke kanaka i make ai maluna o ke kaaahi.

            “Eia hou, o ka oihana makaikiu o Palani nei, ka poe a Topina nei i komo pu aku ai a hana pu, ke hanu mai nei lakou mahope o ka mehou o ka mea nana i pepehi i kela kanaka, a ina no kou hoike ia aku ia, lakou ua loaa iho nei ua daimana malalo o kou malu, i hoike aku au ia oe aole e piha ana ua bora he iwakaluakumamaha mamua o kou noho ana aku iloko o ka halepaahao, aohe a lakou kali ana mai.  Pehea keia i kou manao!”

            “No ka hewa hea auanei lakou e hopu mai ai ia’u—no ka pepehikanaka anei!”

            “Oia ana kou hopena, ina o Mr. Topina nei, ko’u hoahui ma ka hana, e kii aku ana ia lakou a koma mai iloko nei o keia rumi.  Oia ana kou hopena, e Mr. Nila, a ke hopohopo nei au no ia hopena e loaa ana ia oe, no ka mea, maluna o ka oleloike i hoakaka oleia,” alaila hoopa iho la ka lunanaua i ka puolo e waiho ana, “a e koeea mai ana maua e kahea aku i ko maua mau hoamakai Palani e hele mai maanei;

Ka Weli o na Ululaau Mehameha o Aferika a o ka Hoaloha o na Holoholona Ahiu

            “Pehea, e hiki ana no anei ia oe ke huli aku ahiki i kona loaa ana?”

            Iaia i haalele aku ai i na kauhale o na kanaka Paele, ua kamoe pololei aku la kona alahele, no na wahi ana o ka haalele ana iho i na gorila, ua hele no hoi a ke kakahiaka o kekahi la ae, loaa aku la na gorila iaia, ua kaa e ma ka aoao o na gorila ka ike iaia nei, no ka mea aia o Koraka ma ka aoao makaui, a ku nui iho la i kahi hookahi, me ka hoakoakoa ana hele ana mai a poaipuni ae la ia Koraka no kekahi mau manawa, me ka hoonunulu ana i kona leo, a ia wa i poha aku ai ka leo o Koraka i ka pane ana aku;

            “Ua kamaaina makou i na kanaka Paele, he nui ka lakou mau laa e loloa, e hou mai ai i na kino o ko’u poe kanaka a pau i ka make.  He poe kanaka ino loa kela poe, he hana naaupo paha na makou ka hoonahoa ana aku imua o ka make i na laau a na kanaka Paele!”  wahi a ka moi o na gorila, me ka manao kanalua no ka haawi mai i na kokua ana ia Koraka e hoopakele ae ia Miriama.
