"In Youth Prepare for Manhood"

UNCLE PHIL'S DESK.

Here is a story that will please the small boys.  It happened a good many years ago, when people did not know how to make pictures as well as they do now.

TEDDY'S PICTURE

"Now, Teddy, you are to sit right still until Brother Jackson tells you that you can move."

"I don't know  It will seem longer than it really is.  It may seem like half an hour, but I should think it would not be longer than five minutes.  We can't get your likeness unless you sit very still.  This was in the days when sun- pictures were called by the long and hard name, "daguerreotypes," after the Frenchman who studied and found out how ot make them.  His name was Daguerre.  It took a very long time of sitting still, before a good picture could be got.  Teddy was visiting at the minister's, with his mother.  The minister had a room where he took pictures, and Mrs Gaines wished to get a picture of her little boy.  So he had dressed him up very carefully, and was telling him now how to behave, before she put him in the care of Brother Jackson.

Ted as put into a hard chair, and made to sit up very straight by Brother Jackson, who had not heard what Teddy's mother had told him.  He was thinking more of his Sunday sermon, that he was of Teddy.  After he had taken Teddy's picture, he forgot to tell him that he could go.  He went into his 'dark room' to finish the picture, and than he forgot all about the little boy, and went to his study to write his sermon.

And there sat poor little Teddy in that hard, straight-backed chair.  The little fellow wanted a picture very much or he never could have sit so still not even for ten minutes.  There he sat with his head between the "tongs", as he called the head rest, looking straight at the "upper right hand corner of the camera."  If his body was still, his mind was not, and he counted off each minute for several times its real length.  The minutes passed very slowly into an hour.  Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Gaines downstairs were wondering how often Mr. Jackson would have to try for the picture; and after two hours they went carefully up-stairs, because Mr. Jackson was very particular about being interrupted.

When they reached the room, there sat poor Teddy, but the minister was nowhere to be seen.  Mrs. Gaines was frightened and said, "Why, Teddy, what are you doing?"

No answer came from Teddy's lips, and his mother tremblingly cried out:  "Oh my poor child ! are you dumb, or crazy, or what?"  and she pressed poor Teddy to her bosom.

"There ! you've spoilt my picture mamma" was Teddy's reply.  It was five minutes before his mother could understand the matter, and it was more than five years before Teddy understand it.

Just think, boys ! Sitting before the camera for two hours, without stirring.  Why, these days you do not have to sit for five seconds for a picture, and many persons could take a picture of you in less than a second, and let you turn and shake your head and whole body as much as you pleased, and it would not spoil the picture.  Cassibianca, you know,

"Stood on the burning deck

Whence all but him had fled,"

and so did poor little Teddy sit in that straight-backed chair for two long hours, thinking that the minister was taking his picture all that time.  He had as much grit as "t'other boy."

And now, girls, here is the story of "Poor Little Willie" for you.

A little girl, carrying a queer looking bundle stopped a street car the other day.  She was very ragged, and the tears were running down her face.  She got on to the car, and began to tell the conductor her sad story.  The conductor had asked her why she cried, and he looked at the bundle at the same time as if he thought she was carrying a dead baby.

"Cause little Willie's dead, sir, an' I haven't got any money an' I live way out on California avenue, an' I got to take him home, an' oh, what will poor Tommy say when he knows Willie's dead; and wont you please, sir, let me ride, an' I'll give you the money the next time I see you---boo hoo ! boo hoo !"  and the child's story was cut short by a fit of crying.

It was rather hard to make a hearse of his street car, and for minute or two the man hardly knew what to do; but a gentleman handed him five cents, and made a place by his side for the little girl and her curious burden.

"When did little Willie die?" asked the kind gentleman, after the girl had stopped crying.

"This afternoon, just a little bit ago, when I was crossing State Street with him, a wagon came along, and, boo hoo ! boo hoo ! ran over him.

"And who is little Tommy?"

"He's my brother, sir.  He's a lame boy, and his poor legs wont bear him at all; and oh, how he loved poor little Willie."

"Don't they know about it at home yet?"

"No sir, not yet, and oh, what will poor little Tommy and mother say?" boo hoo !

Then the gentleman took off his hat and dropped a big silver dollar into it, and went around to the other passengers, and whispered, "For the funeral, they are poor people."  The other passengers dropped something into the hat, and quite a little sum of money was put into the little girl's hand.  A kind old lady said, "Poor Dear!" and lifted the old shawl which covered the face of the corpse.  She looked for only an instant, and then sank back into her seat.  Willie was a dog.

Master Bobby's father is the owner of a machine which hatches out eggs.  The other day, as Master Bobby was watching a chicken breaking its way through its shell, he said, "I see how he gets out, but how did he get in?"

Little 4-year old Mattie complained to her mother that her shoes "hurted" her.  "Why Mattie, you've put them on the wrong feet."  Puzzled, and ready to cry she answered, "What'll I do mamma, They's all the feet I got."
