“In Youth Prepare for Manhood”
UNCLE PHIL @ DESK
Uncle Phil @an@e @ sermon the other day, when he was looking for something in his desk @est you, and here it is. It is not a story like those you have read in the Colum, and yet it is a story @. It is a story that is called an “allegory.” or a “parable,” and teaches @ lesson, which you must find out.
The preacher of this sermon was a negro slave, working on a plantation in one of the Southern States. He could not read or write, but, somehow he had learned a good deal of the Bible. His sermon was about
Glad Tidings.
and he said: “Bredren, Ise gwin to take two texes. The first ob dese texes am “Glad tidings of great y y which am to be to all people,” and @dder tex@ is “Halleluyah.”
Now, bredren. what am glad tidings of great y y? There is a king going through the streets in his chariot, and six calico horses, like what they have in the circus, prancin along through the street. There sits the King in his chariot. Nobody touches the king, nobody speaks to the king. He sits in his chariot, and the soldiers say, “Hurrah for the king.” Nobody touches the king.
And there is a nigger boy standin on the corner ob de street, an he is ragged an dirty, an his hair is sticking out ob de holes in his cap, an his toes out ob his shoes, looking at de procession. Nobody care for him. He hain’t got no fader, nor no moder, nor no auntie. Nobody care for him, all ragged and dirty.
The king see the boy, so he says to one ob his officers. “Bring dat boy to me.” But de officer didn’t want to fetch a nigger. So he says ‘dat boy is all dirt.” Then the king, he says: “Bring the boy to me.” He got mad, you see. Then this here officer he wanted to sh@k. He wanted to scare de king, an he says, “If I bring dat boy to you, you will get something off from him. Then the king got so mad, that his face went clear on de top ob his head, an he says: “You bring dat boy to me.’ An he brought him. An he says, ‘you take dat boy away, wash him up, and comb his hair. Give him a new pair of shoes, an measure him for a new suit of clothes, an have eddicated.’
An he took de boy away. An the king come back after a while, an he had the same calico horses a he asked for de boy. Every body forgot de boy, but de king didn’t. He said: “Bring dat boy to me.” An they brung de boy, an nobody knew de boy but de king. He knew him. He said, ‘Now, my child, you come an sit right here, alongside ob me. Right here. You belong here. Sit along side ob me in this chariot. You belong in it. Why, you know I have adopted you. You are my child; you are my son, my heir. Sit right here! There is right where you belong.’
Wouldn’t that be glad tidings of great joy to dat nigger boy? What does de text day, it am to be to all people? But, bredren, we are a despised people. The white people shove us off from God’s service; but we are a people. We are an oppressed people, but we are a people --- think ob dat, bredren, only think of it! Don’t dat go down into your hearts?
Now it is time for de secon text; ‘Hallelujah.’ (Great laughter.) I want you to holler, just as loud as you can holler!’
There, that old darkey slave may not have known much bout books, but he had a good deal of what is called in English, common sense, See if you can find out what those two words mean in your own language.
And I will now tell you a story for little girls. It is called
MOLLIE’S LITTLE LESSON.
“Oh how the sun shine!” said Mollie as she got out of bed on a morning in spring.
“I know the wild flowers are peeping up in the woods. I know just where they are too. Oh dear! I don’t want to go to school.” Mollie finished dressing, and then looked over towards the woods.
“I don’t believe I’m very well, I wonder if I don’t look pale.” She went to the glass and was sorry to see how rosy her round cheeks were.
“But I don’t feel very well any way.”
She put on a doleful face and kept it on until she sat down to breakfast. It was hard work not to laugh when her little kitty ran over the floor chasing a marble.
“What is the matter, Mollie?” asked her mamma.
“I don’t feel very well, mamma. I think I had better not go to school today. I need a little fresh air.”
@
“If you @ you can only @ , my dear,” said mamma.
Mollie did not @ meal, but she @ ate it.
“I think yu had better be d@wn,” said mamma, leading Mollie up stairs. “And you will be more comfortable with your night dress on. And before Mollie had time to think, she was in @. “Can’t I have my picture back or my paint box?” she asked.
“No dear, not til you get well.”
What a @ was@ I@ and the @, and Mollie wished with all her @ she was @ . When dinner came, mamma brought her some toast, though she was hungry @.
“Can’t @etty and Tom come into my room?” she asked, when they returned from @.
“No you must be kept quiet,” said mamma.
How she hated the quiet! As she had a great deal of time she began to think she had tried very hard to feel sick, but it was not true she had been. She told her mamma so when she came to say her prayers.
“Whenever you are tempted to say what is not true, dear, think of this long day in bed,” said mamma, kissing her.
As her mamma went down stairs, she smiled to herself and said:
“I think my dear little girl has learned a lesson.”
