KE KILOHANA POOKELA NO KA LAHUI HAWAII.

Our English Column.

“In Youth Prepare for Manhood.”

UNCLE PHIL’S DESK.

Do any of my Hawaiian friends know what an “allegory” is? There are other words in English which mean about the same thing, as the words “parable”, and “fable”. Nearly all of you know what a fable is, as you have many of them in your school readers.

Here is an allegory which nearly all of you will understand, and it will show you the meaning of two very important words of the English language.

            I-WISH AND I-WILL.

These boys I-wish and I-will, were little cousins, who lived with their grandmother in a pretty, quiet cottage. They were kin in blood, but it could be seen they were very different in their ways of doing things. Here is an example. One snowy morning they set by the fire-place, warming and rubbing their fingers, for it was very cold.

“I wish I could get warm” one of the boys said, “I never saw such cold weather. I wish the winter was over, or that the air would grow a little more mild and pleasant. It’s no great fun getting one’s toes and nose nipped with the cold in this way.”

His cousin was looking a little blue, too, and his teeth began to show signs of chattering. But he answered quickly, “Yes, it’s pretty bad: this fire does’nt burn well. I must get warmed up some way or another.”

And saying this, I-will ran out in the snow, took an axe and chopped up a lot of wood, so that he might sit all that stormy holiday by a good, blazing fire. But he found himself so warm after chopping the wood, that, after he had carried in many arms-ful of it, his cheeks glowed, and his eyes glistened, as if he had been working in the summer, out in the sun.

I-wish was glad to see the great pile of logs heaped on the fire, but he could not enjoy it much, for when a door or a window was opened suddenly his teeth went to chattering again.

“I wish these horrid lessons were learned and done with” said one of these little school-boys, one night when the lessons for the next day were much harder than usual. “It’s a shame to give a boy such a lot of lessons as that to learn, and we’ll be kept in just the same if we don’t know every word.”

But I-wish could not have meant all that he said, because, instead of following the example of I-will, who was studying very hard, he sat swinging his legs on the chair, and then teasing the cat, yawning and casting sour looks at the fire.

I-will answered him: “yes, you’re right about that; hard is the name when you talk about these lessons, but talking about them don’t help any. Nobody is going to excuse us if we don’t know them. I’ll know them if it takes me till midnight.”

I-will did it, but I-wish got a failure next day, for he had desired with his lips, but with neither his heart nor his head.

In those school days it happened that a boy from the city who was visiting near by, came at recess one noon time, and brought with him a fine kite to fly. It was made of many colored papers and pleased the eyes of all the country boys. I-wish longed for it as it floated off like a gay banner in the air. He “would give anything for one.”

“Make one, you can make it”, said little I-will: “that is what I intend to do”.

“Make it! indeed I couldn’t”, was the answer. “I shall never have one if it depends upon that. I only wish I might”.

By the time this mournful sentence was finished I-will had run to the nearest shop, bought his colored papers, and was back before the school-bell rang.

That evening, by grandmother’s cheerful fireside, and after lessons were got, I-will made his kite, which was rather better than the one the city boy had. For I-will’s had a hole with strings going across, which made a sound like a harp, as it went up into the air. Another day he made a kite for I-wish, and then for some other boys, and I-will was the hero of the school, because he was the boy who could make kites.

When these two boys became men I-will was always ahead of I-wish, who would often sign and say “I wish I was a rich man, with plenty of money to do with, then I would fit up the old home and make a good house of it.”

I-will answered him, “I don’t want any other man’s money, but I love a pretty home as you do, and I shall soon make this old shanty shake to the sound of the hammer, and the garden shall blossom out in roses.”

And he did. He went to work and cleared out weeds and rooted up stumps. He mended the house, he put on fresh, clean paint inside and out. By and by a family helped him keep things nice there. He made the fields fertile, and sold loads and loads of grain.

For I-wish, poor fellow, things grew worse instead of better. The longer he wished, the more his property went to decay. The weeds took possession of his fields, and the damp, and mould rolled down the wall of his house. He “wished they wouldn’t,” until the sheriff came and sold off the property that remained, and poor I-wish died in the poor house.
