"In Youth Prepare for Manhood."

UNCLE PHIL'S DESK

Well, young friends, the FOURTH of JULY has come and gone.  It is the great holiday of all the people of the United States.  I wonder if you Hawaiian boys and girls know why the 4th of July is kept as a great day by Americans.  I will tell you.  More than a hundred years ago, before the year 1776, the great country now called THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was very little known.  The people then lived near the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and were few in number, and were called colonies, because they had left their father land in Europe and had gone to America to make new homes for themselves.  At first, and for many years, these colonies felt weak an, like little children, had to be taken care of by the mother country.  But after a while, they felt stronger and, like big boys and girls, though they could take care of themselves, and not trouble the 'old folks.'  But the 'old folks' didn't think so, or if they did, they thought it was only right for their boys to help pay back a part of the cost of taking care of them.  So the 'old folks' would not hear any of the requests of these big boys, but sent over some pretty hard old governors and guardians, to see that the big boys did as the old folks wanted them to.  Now these boys were growing bigger and bigger every year, and their guardians were getting to be more and more strict, and the old folks at home were crying out all the time for more money, and more merchandise, and sent over a lot of soldiers to help the poor old guardians to make boys mind.

At last these boys could not stand it any longer, especially the old folks wanted to make them pay more for tea and other things, and would not ask the boys first if they could pay any more.  The old folks at home were very rich, but like most rich people, the more their boys gave them, the more they wanted.

So these boys all got together down in Old Philadelphia, and talked it all over; and some talked louder than others; but they were all agreed that the "old folks" were rich enough, and could live very well without any more help from them, and they were too old, these boys were, to have guardians put over them; so they wrote out a paper called the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and all of them signed it on the Fourth of July, 1776, in a large building called "Independence Hall", in the city of Philadelphia.  Uncle Phil has been all over that building, and has seen the portraits of those who signed the paper, and has seen the same old "Declaration of Independence", which was kept in a big iron safe, and shown to people who wised to see the

Most Celebrated Paper in the World.

For those big boys, in order to prove that they meant to have their independence, just as the paper said, had to fight with their guardians and the soldiers, which the old folks sent over to punish them for daring to take care of themselves.  They fought against them year after year, and at last they drove away all of their guardians, and caught the soldiers of the "old folks" at Yorktown, and they all left the country.  So these big boys showed pretty clearly to the 'old folks at home' that they could take care of themselves as they were of age, and the old folks, after growling over it, told them to go.

After this, these big boys, or young men they were then, got together, and after a great deal of talk, agreed to stand by each other, in case the "old folks" should make any more trouble.  And they set apart the day when they signed the Declaration of Independence, The Fourth of July, to be the great National Day: on which they and their children, and their children's children for many years to come, could celebrate the great fight for their right to govern themselves.  In those early days there were only thirteen of those boys; but, to-day there are forty-two of them, and there are more getting ready to join in with them.

When those thirteen colonies became the "United States of America", there were less than five million of inhabitants in them; but now, there are supposed to be sixty-five millions of men, women and children living in that great country.

Now, American boys don't think that the Forth of July is much of a day, unless they can make all the noise they want to; and Uncle Phil thinks that boys of all nations think noise is the principal thing for boys to make.  Some of them make kites, and some make bows and arrows, and some make schooners to sail on a pond, but when a great holiday, like the Fourth of July, comes around, they are not happy unless they can make a noise.

And just think how much money that noise @ests  You have all helped many times to make a big noise on Chinese New years, with Chinese firecrackers, those very little round things that make a very big noise, and leave behind the noise a nasty smoke and a lot of rubbish to be cleaned up.  Now just get your teachers to help you to reckon up how much money these firecrackers cost in the place where your school is, and let Uncle Phil know.  Let me knkow how many dollars worth you think are fired off in Honolulu, in Hilo, or in Wailuku on a Chinese New Years.

Then think of "Uncle Sam's" small boys and girls, on a Fourth of July.  Millions and millions of them.  It takes many ship loads of fire crackers, all sent from China, to help the American small boy and girl to make enough noise on the great 4th of July  And wherever the American boy goes, he gets other boys to help him out in his noise.

Some other time I will tell you about a great day which your fathers and grandfaterhs used to keep as a holiday, but which you school boys and girls have neer heard about, I think.
