"In Youth Prepare for Manhood."

UNCLE PHIL'S DESK

Many of the boys and girls around the Desk have heard about "April Fool." Some of you have fooled others, and been fooled by others. The first day of April has been called "All Fool's Day" for a great many years. That is the one day in the whole year when boys and girls, and men and women too, try to fool each other. You all know what that means. Often has Uncle Phil heard some of you on the play ground shout out, "you can't fool me." You play cracks on each other, trying to make each other do some foolish thing. Very often you get angry, and many quarrels arise on account of "April Fool."  Nobody likes to be fooled that way, even when trying to fool others. Such fooling does not make any one feel happy. Here is a story of some.

"P@N@ FOOLING"

"May I do some queer things April Fool's Day, mama?' asked little Margaret. Her mother trusted the little girl that she would do nothing wrong, so she said "yes, dear, if you are sure to do nothing unkind, or in bad taste." Margaret smiled knowingly and promised. On the first of April, Katy, the cook, went into the kitchen to build her fire. She was feeling tired at having to do the same things every day. She took the cover off the stove, and behold! The wood and coal were all ready laid!

"Bless us and save us!" cried Katy; an' 't'was an April fool I expected to tumble into this morning'."

Margaret, with a "shining morning face," was early at the breakfast table.

"Look under your plate, Tom," she said to her brother, when that wise young gentlemen refused for a long time to turn it over.

"I guess so so!" said he knowingly. "April Fool! You can't catch me with chaff, Miss Maggie."

"O look! please look!" cried Margaret. "I can't wait. It is an April Fool, but it is a lovely one. Oh, please look!"

"Yes, Tom, don't disappoint her," said mama gently. And Tom, muttering something about "girls' nonsense," did look and saw - the jack knife which he had wanted for months.-

"Well, I'm a Dutchman;" he said, without knowing whether he were one or not.

"It is an April Fool," cried Margaret, getting up from the table to dance around it. "It's my kind; I invented it."

Because he was a boy, Tom did not say much; but when he left the room, he slily threw away the dead mouse that he was going to put into Margaret's pocket.

The little girl ran off early to school, calling on the way at the little house where Pete Smiley lived alone, and spent his time grumbling at his neighbors and his own rheumatism. "Good morning," said Margaret, as she opened his kitchen door. "Here is something for you." "Get out!" shouted Pete, reaching out for his cane. "You're the fifth little torment that's been here this morning with your April Fools! Get out, or I'll lay this over your shoulders." Margaret grew pale, but she did not run away.

"It is an April Fool," she said, bravely. "If you'll open it, I'll stand right here, and if you do not like it, you can strike me as hard as you like."

To his own surprise, Pete did open the package. There was in it, a cup full of the strong peppermint candies he liked next to his tobacco.

"Well, that is a fine April Fool!" he cried.

"I think April Fools' Day is quite nice," said Margaret as she made her little bow. "Good morning, sir."

So her day went on, filled with surprises that had nothing but sweetness in them. "I've had a beautiful time," said Margaret to herself that night, and I have not let anybody else see I was angry when I was fooled.

Here is another story, not an April Fool one, which shows how two folks were mistaken, without trying to fool each other. It is called

"GLASSES TO READ WIF"

It was a warm summer day when Uncle Ephraim, a good old negro, went into an optician's shop, (an optician is one who sells glasses of all kinds for the eyes to use) and, taking off his tall white hat, and wiping the sweat from his forehead with a big red handkerchief, sat down carefully on a stool, and asked for a pair of glasses "fer to read wif."

"What number do you wear," asked the optician?

Uncle Ephraim grinned, "I guess I wear two," said he.

"Number two!" cried out the optician in great surprise.

"It isʻ two glasses, sah! One fer de one eye, and one fur de odder."

The optician looked at him with a frown for a minute; but, seeing that the old man was not trying to fool him, went on with the business before him.

"Try on these," he said, picking out a pair of spectacles, "ard see if you can read the letters on that card over there."

Uncle Ephraim carefully put on the glasses, and looked eagerly at the card.

"Carn't read it, such, boss" he said, looking disappointed.

"Well, try on these, " said the optician, giving him a stronger pair.

"No go, boss," said Uncle Ephraim.

The man gave him another pair, and then another. Not one of them all could help Uncle Ephraim to read, though he tried ever so hard, and wiped his forehead again and again with his handkerchief.

"Look here" said the optician at last, "can you read at all?"

"Nebber could read, boss," said Uncle Ephraim, "Dey nabber larded me how, no how. But I done hearn tell ob people dat could read wif glasses, dat could'nt not read widout ʻem, nohow, an' I made up my min' I'd see if it was dat way wif me!"
