KE KILOHANA POOKELA NO KA LAHUI HAWAII.

Our English Column.

"In Youth Prepare for Manhood"

UNCLE PHILS DESK.

Uncle Phil wishes to talk with Hawaiian boys and girls who are learning the English language. He is an old school master who like to see young faces around him and who wishes to do what he can to make them happy. So he has brought his @ and put it in this corner of the KUOKOA, where you boys and girls can easily find him From his DESK. Uncle Phil sends his "Aloha" to his young Hawaiian friends in the schools. He invites them all to gather around him in his corner and ask him questions. For all boys and girls like to questions; and many of their questions are hard to answer.

Uncle Phil's DESK is like a cupboard. A cupboard is a place where all kinds of good things are kept, such as bread, cakes, pies, sugar, poi, etc. After a while these good things are eaten, and then they strengthen bodies of those who eat them. Good food from mama's cupboard strengthens the bodies of boys and girls, and helps them grow to be men and women.

Uncle Phil will keep in his desk all kinds of good food for the minds of boys and girls. This food will help their minds to grow whilst their bodies are growing.

So, all Hawaiian boys and girls who know anything of the English Language, and who wish to learn more, come once a week around Uncle Phil's DESK in this corner of the KUOKOA, and let us have a good time talking English together.

Sometimes you will find some nice stories here. Sometimes you will find some questions which will set you to thinking what their answers are. Then, too, there will be some puzzles for you to work on, to see if you know enough English to find their answers. And when you think you have out the true answers, just sit down and write a letter to Uncle Phil in the best English you can, and tell him your answers; and if they are the true answers he will keep them in his desk full of good things. He wants you to learn to write correct English. If your letters show that you are trying to learn how to write good English, the will be put into Uncle Phil's letter box and kept in his desk. So write short letters to Uncle Phil, Hawaiian boys and girls, telling about your home, your school, your garden, your work, or anything else you would like to have other boys and girls know. Write short sentences with short words in them to begin with.

Now we will open the DESK and see what we can find. Here are some

QUESTIONS

for you to think about, and try to find their true answers.

1- How many places named "Honolulu" are there in these Islands and where are they?

2 - Wailuku is often called the "Four Waters;" what are the names of the Four Waters, and why were they so called?

3 - Many of you have seen the statue in front of the Government House in Honolulu: in whose honor is it places there?

4 - What did that Hawaiian do that has made his name famous all over the world?

While we are talking about famous Hawaiians I will hide the name of one whom I have seen many times, in a

PUZZLE

and you may look for it, and when you have found it bring it to Uncle Phil's desk. Take one-fifth of the word judge, one-fourth of the word bond, one-fourth of the word snow, and one-seventh of the word theater, and you will spell out the name of this good and wise Hawaiian. Then take one-fourth of the word high and one-fifth of the word night, and you will have his other name. Who was this Hawaiian?

Can any of you tell me what country is called "Uncle Sam's Farm," and how large that Farm is?

Here are two letters written by a girl and a boy, and printed in one of the papers got up for boys and girls living on "Uncle Sam's Farm." You can tell from them how to write your letters, and what to write about.

            Elmira, California.

"I live in the country with my Auntie. My mama has been dead over three months. I say my lessons to my Aunt. I study arithmetic, geography, spelling, history, reading and writing. I shall be 10 years old the 1@ day of March. I have two pet kitties.

            Florence B. R"

Uncle Phil thinks that this little 10 year old girl has too many studies to trouble her brain with. She should have more time to play with her pet kitties.

Here is a letter written by a little boy from                "Dover, Delaware.

"Seeing so many boys and girls are writing letters, I thought it might please some of them to know of our town. It is the capital and chief town of this State. The first settler was Ezekiel Needham, who received the land from Wm. Penn in 1684. Dover contains the state house, the court house, two banks, a new post-office, and about fifty stores. There are also seven churches and nine graded schools. The populations of Dover is about 3200 and is still growing.

                                                "Roscoe N. D."

Boys, please get your dictionaries and find out what a "settler" is, and then tell Uncle Phil what "settlers" there are in our islands.Tell him, too, in what grade you are at school, because your school is also a graded school.

When you write, direct your letters to

                        H. R. HITCHCOCK,

                                    Hilo,

                                        Hawaii,

and Uncle Phil will get them, and put the nice ones in his desk here in this corner of the KUOKOA.
