Ka Nupepa Kuokoa.

English Column.

In our issue this work we present a portrait of Mr. Seward, the distinguished American statesman, which will be recognized as a faithful likeness.  He is now traveling in China, and has lately had the rare honor of a presentation to the Emperor of China.

On our second page is a fourth letter from our correspondent in France, whose descriptions of the war are so vivid.

On the first page we reprint the well translated song of Casablanca, with an introduction, giving the incidents in the thrilling story.

The Rev. Charles Samuel Stewart, D D., died Dec. 14, at Cooperstown, at the age of 75 years.  Dr. Stewart was senior chaplain of the United States Navy,-- and formerly resided in these islands.

A female lecturer said; "Get married, young men, and be quick about it.  Don't wait for the millenium, for the girls to become angels.  You'd look well beside an angel, wouldn't you, you blockhead?"

A Philadelphia lawyer was rebuked by the court for badgering a witness, and was told that witnesses should be treated in the same manner as any gentleman would treat a visitor to his house.

Mr. Palmer's new hotel in Chicago, on which work has been commenced, is intended to outshine anything in America.  @@@ main front will be 256 feet and it will reach through to Wabash Avenue, a distance of 340 feet.  It is expected to swallow two million dollars before it is completed and furnished.

The clipper-ships Frolic and Glory of the Seas left San Francisco on the same day, one for Liverpool and the other for Cork, were in each other's company for six weeks, then separated, and reached their destinations on the same day, the Frolic arriving but six hours before her competitor.

Capt. TRAVERS, of Rochester, made a wager of $25 that he could at the distance of thirty-six feet, with a pistol, shoot from the top of a wine bottle a cork on which is placed a bullet, dropping the bullet into the bottle and not breaking the bottle.  He made twelve shots, and performed the feat four times.

Prince AMADEUS, the new King of Spain, made his entry to Madrid on Monday, and was received most enthusiastically by the people.  Immediately after his arrival he paid a visit to the widow of Gen. Prim. and in a feeling manner expressed his sympathy for her in her bereavement.  He then proceeded to the Chamber of the Cortes and took the oath as King of Spain.  The enthusiasm is universal.

Defenders of tippling are wont to point triumphantly to men who have reached a hearty old age and taken their daily dram through all their life.  And Grant's cigar to some people is a sufficient answer to those who take strong ground against tobacco.  But Captain Larbouche, of New York, the well-known centenarian, is an inveterate opium eater, taking seventy five grams a day, while a single grain would kill the most of us.  But does any one claim that opium is therefore a good thing?

Give your children fortune without education, and at least one-half of the number will go down to the tomb of oblivion--perhaps to ruin.  Give them an education, and they will be a fortune to themselves and their country.  It is an inheritance worth more than gold, for it buys true honor; they never can spend nor lose it; and through life it ever proves a friend--in death a consolation.

The new King of Spain is third child and second son of Victor Emmanuel.  He was born in May, 1835.  His mother was an Austrian Princess.  She died in 1855.  All sorts of conservatives and grandees protested against the King's candidacy, but these don't go for much in Spain of to-day.  The election to the Spanish throne has been regarded with the utmost indifference in France.  "What matter to us now who shall reign in Spain," says a French writer; and, indeed, they've matters more important to attend to.
